The pitch

After the pitch with Kim and Jamie it had been established that I shall leave my portraiture work that I have worked on independently throughout the year, as I feel it has become quite repetitive and I have taken all I can from the subject matter as I can for now.  I had started work on portraiture with the intent of using it as the subject matter for my FMP, but after my research and exploration into the subject, I am glad I have come to this conclusion now, rather than mid way through the project. So instead of using this for my FMP I am choosing to explore fresh ideas.

Although I am changing subject matter I still enjoy using the oil based printing inks and the texture in their viscosity. I particularly enjoy the way the colours can naturally interact to generate their own narrative.
As I had been looking at Gerhard Richter for my portraiture work I also observed his abstractions, which I feel could be a good starting point for me as they remind me that painting is after all about the paint. His abstractions contain numerous layers and a diverse range in mark making; these are elements I also have in my portraiture work that I wish to continue with, but also experiment with.

Looking for a new subject matter after the pitch I went through some of my art books and found the work of Gabriel Orozco intriguing. He works with found object both natural and man made, however I find his works with natural objects most interesting and inspirational.  This is why I have chosen to use natural objects as a starting point for my abstract work.

When mentioning I would like to experiment with mark making and colour, Jamie suggested I should look into Len Lye as his experimental animation involves drawing directly onto film. Surprisingly I found the work intriguing as a motion abstraction was something new to me. I had never consider looking into film before but I enjoy observing new approaches and I am considering experimenting with analogue film and Len Lye's method of drawing onto film as another area for exploration. Of his process I am most interested in the unknown element of the method in that you don't know exactly how the piece will appear when projected which is new for me as I have a painting background, where the progression of the work can be carefully studied and adapted.
